It would appear that there is  now an active Raspberry Pi user base in the club. Rob M0RBY has it running his weather station instead of the more power hungry computer, Sam 2E0SAN has it running as a media server, and I've just been messing around with the operating system.
The point is that I have been playing (or should that really be researching) the various add-ons being sold for this little computer. So in sort of ranks of usefulness, we'll go through some of them.
Pi-View: This is an HDMI to VGA converter so you can use a Pi with an older monitor. They pull close to the limit of current from the Pi, about 160mA it seems. With older VGA monitors you may have to adjust the settings in one of the config files on the SD card to get it properly display, there a few settings you can un-hash to get it to scale correctly and get rid of any annoying border.
WiPi: It's a generic wifi dongle, it's already included in the Linux kernel. There's a setup tool on the desktop for it, but it is a bit clunky. The driver's not intelligent enough to hang onto a connection if it's a bit flaky. You have to select the network, it won't auto select.
PiFace: it's a small interface board with 2 relays and switch inputs and outputs. Won't switch mains but LV not problem up to about 3A. Maybe suitable for antenna switching or rotator control.
Gertboard: A rather more sophisticated interface board. More inputs, this time digital and analogue (though relatively slow but good enough for position feedback etc) inputs and outputs. Has a built in bridge motor driver for a small DC motor.
Embedded Pi: This is the new one on the block. Works in various modes but allows you to use Arduino add-on boards. This gives you a wider range of boards to play with. Not much to say as one of colleagues has borrowed it.
We also need to remember that the Pi is now not the only one in the field. The Beaglebone Black is now out. It'll run Linux or Android and has a bit more processing punch than the PI, and uses Arduino add-on boards.
That should keep the old programming skills going for as bit longer.
